Liz:

On this week's episode of Devil's Trap podcast, we have Calliope.

Liz:

Hm, I see.

Diana:

And you can't spell subtext without S E, X.

Liz:

And a single man te.

Diana:

Welcome to this week's episode of Devil's Trap podcast.

Diana:

I'm Diana.

Liz:

And I'm Liz.

Diana:

And we're going to talk about season 10, episode 5, fan fiction.

Liz:

Fantastic.

Diana:

Yeah.

Liz:

There's so many fun opportunities.

Diana:

Yeah, there is, there are.

Diana:

But first, what have you been up to, Liz?

Liz:

Fantastically, some things that.

Liz:

No, I could.

Liz:

I couldn't think of any more fan puns.

Liz:

It's really sad that I ran out that quickly.

Liz:

You know, it's.

Liz:

It's.

Liz:

It's been a week since the last time we recorded.

Liz:

I can say that.

Liz:

And so within that week.

Liz:

Let's see.

Liz:

See, we had a snow apocalypse, I think, you know, the Texas had snow.

Liz:

I got like an.

Liz:

An inch.

Liz:

I think.

Diana:

I did.

Diana:

I did not.

Liz:

You got no snow.

Liz:

Houston got snow, which was weird.

Liz:

And.

Liz:

Yeah.

Liz:

And now we're back in the 50s.

Liz:

So that's a weather report for.

Liz:

For where I live and.

Liz:

But so we're in winter and still not running around doing a ton of things because it's.

Liz:

It's winter and there was an inch of snow and when there's snow, you can't really go anywhere.

Liz:

In Texas, like, they kind of close everything down.

Liz:

So.

Liz:

Been at home still watching a lot of.

Liz:

Lots of television and getting caught up in all the things and wanting more stuff as it was like, oh, all the things that I watched.

Liz:

I watched this new movie that came out called your monster and it was a.

Liz:

It's basically kind of a modern Beauty and the Beast story.

Liz:

It's very interesting dark comedy.

Liz:

It was taken from a short and then expanded into a larger movie.

Liz:

And it's.

Liz:

Yeah, it's.

Liz:

It's quite the ride.

Liz:

And the beast is really hot and so it's.

Liz:

It's very interesting.

Liz:

It's an interesting take on it, so I'd recommend it, I think.

Liz:

I know I felt ways after it ended, but I kind of want everyone else to feel the way.

Liz:

So, yeah, I would say go watch that.

Diana:

Yeah.

Diana:

I've been in a fun world of getting.

Diana:

Doing a closet renovation, which means you have to go through all of your things.

Diana:

I've also been watching started in a new to me show, not new show called Younger and I don't know how.

Liz:

I feel about it.

Liz:

I saw parts of Younger when it first came out and I do not like deception as a storyline mainly.

Liz:

And that says a lot about things I need to work out in therapy.

Liz:

But I have a very hard time where the main line and also that becomes like, the main dramatic problem is, is that somebody's lying.

Diana:

Yeah.

Liz:

And it's, it stresses me out too much because I'm just like, you know, you wouldn't have these problems if you would just tell the goddamn truth.

Liz:

And this, I think that's the way it pisses me off.

Liz:

I'm like, you, this is not a problem.

Liz:

Stop being a liar, and you don't have a problem anymore.

Diana:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Diana:

Anyways, that's what I said premise.

Diana:

But I really like.

Liz:

Fantastic, though.

Liz:

I mean, like, the entire.

Diana:

Yeah, it's a really good cast.

Diana:

That's what.

Liz:

It's a great cast.

Liz:

It's really well written.

Diana:

It's just.

Diana:

Yeah, it's something.

Diana:

Anyways, I needed.

Diana:

I needed some filler on Netflix while I was folding laundry, and here we are.

Diana:

So apparently I watch that show now and then.

Diana:

Yeah, I got to go be help.

Diana:

Help.

Diana:

Quote, unquote, judge.

Diana:

I have my Apollo moment, I guess, on American Idol.

Diana:

Apollo moment.

Diana:

But they're kind of cool for a busking program tied to the music office for the city of Dallas.

Diana:

So it's kind of cool today, go listen to some amazing singers that I had never heard of before in our Dallas music community.

Diana:

So that's neat.

Liz:

What was the one that, like, made you.

Liz:

It was like, like, did you, like, jump up and say yes and like, you get a ticket?

Diana:

Yeah, I did.

Diana:

There's one.

Diana:

There was one.

Diana:

We all, like, freaked out.

Diana:

She was amazing.

Diana:

Yeah.

Diana:

Young chick just popped up there and solo by herself with her electric.

Diana:

Electric guitar, not acoustic, and sang an original song, and she killed it, and it was kind of cool.

Diana:

So, you know, it was neat.

Diana:

So excited.

Diana:

Excited to see new artists.

Diana:

Always.

Diana:

It's always fun to see people, and it takes some balls.

Diana:

It's actually, like, harder in some ways.

Diana:

Like, get up in a room in a room in front of, like, six people sitting around and just, like, sing for them by yourself.

Diana:

Playing guitar like, that is terrifying.

Liz:

I, I, I get.

Liz:

I dare anybody to do that.

Liz:

That's.

Liz:

That is terrifying for sure.

Diana:

So.

Diana:

No, that was, it was really cool to see folks, you know, be brave enough to go do that.

Diana:

That was neat.

Diana:

And then.

Diana:

Yeah, and then I'm.

Diana:

By the time this episode is dropping, it'll be a really cool event that I've been working really hard on called Punks and Pokes at Longhorn Ballroom.

Liz:

It's not as dirty as it sounds.

Diana:

It's punks and cow pokes.

Diana:

So it's like punk versus country night to be fun.

Diana:

So, yeah, that's my life right now.

Liz:

Is getting ready Team Punk.

Diana:

I know.

Diana:

But, yeah, so that's been my life right now.

Diana:

So it's.

Diana:

It's not bad.

Liz:

It's just busy.

Liz:

Very cool.

Liz:

Cool, cool, cool.

Liz:

So I said it is January.

Liz:

We're kind of in between still and a lot of.

Liz:

Of the boys stuff, so not a lot of Supernatural news going on.

Liz:

Padalecki just did a fun little thing over on stands where he just.

Liz:

He just dropped a whole new.

Liz:

He dropped a whole new line of merch, but there's a bunch of new moose stuff over on there.

Liz:

And I forget which charity it's going to, but his stuff generally goes to charity.

Liz:

And he just did an ASL sign language thing with crap.

Liz:

I'm gonna forget her name and edit in her name here, and then that'll be great.

Liz:

Anyhow, so that's going out over on stand.

Liz:

So go check that out.

Liz:

And.

Liz:

Yeah, I think we're ready to start talking about this very exciting episode, which is fan fict.

Liz:

,:

Liz:

So.

Liz:

And I think he did a really good job.

Liz:

So.

Liz:

All right.

Liz:

Anything you want to say before we get started?

Diana:

Nope.

Liz:

Okay.

Liz:

So we open on a theater set.

Diana:

Yes.

Diana:

Yeah.

Diana:

And it's a stage.

Diana:

And there's a girl on the sofa reading.

Diana:

And the lights flicker, and a fake.

Diana:

Like, obviously intentionally fake sheet ghost drops from the ceiling.

Diana:

She screams.

Diana:

And then we get two young women, teenagers.

Diana:

Teenagers dressed as in costume.

Diana:

Enter the shotgun.

Diana:

Enter the room with shotguns, fake shotguns, orange tip and all, and say that they're the Winchesters.

Diana:

This is Sam.

Liz:

Well, they say, ghost, meet Winchester.

Diana:

Ghost, meet Winchester.

Diana:

So, yeah, these are costume Winchester costumes.

Liz:

Somebody yells, cut.

Liz:

And this somebody is a girl in a literal schoolgirl outfit.

Liz:

A school uniform.

Liz:

And ask if it is some kind of joke, pointing out the obvious, because this takes place before Carver Edmond's masterpiece, the Dark side of the Moon.

Diana:

And so Dean should be wearing his Samuel as a sign of brotherly love.

Diana:

But she says that he kept hitting her in the face.

Liz:

And Siobhan took it off because it was hitting her lips.

Liz:

Which is also funny because Jensen has infamously said that he was glad to lose this amulet because he kept chipping his teeth.

Diana:

That's.

Diana:

Yeah.

Diana:

So she's like, I'm just here for college credit.

Diana:

And then we get a shoving match between Siobhan and our director.

Diana:

We find her name is Marie.

Diana:

Finally, a teacher intervenes in this drama and says, this is too drama in the drama.

Diana:

Too much drama in the drama department.

Diana:

And she's going to the principal and shutting the shit down.

Liz:

And it's over, Marie.

Liz:

It's over.

Liz:

But Marie is going to push everybody onwards.

Diana:

No.

Diana:

Until she gets suspended.

Diana:

The show must go on.

Diana:

And so we cut to our teacher, who's outside drinking from something questionable.

Diana:

And she is on the phone going on about why.

Diana:

Why they couldn't.

Diana:

Why couldn't they just do Godspeed, like good little skinks.

Liz:

God spell.

Diana:

God spelled Jesus.

Diana:

I know what it is.

Diana:

And I wrote reading it.

Diana:

I know it.

Diana:

Godsp.

Liz:

And yay, skanks.

Liz:

Bring back skanks.

Diana:

Yeah, Good God spell.

Diana:

Like good little skanks.

Diana:

And she's just talking about how horrible this whole play is.

Diana:

And something is watching her from the bush.

Liz:

And she's also, like, very into.

Liz:

Like, very into theater for a high school.

Liz:

Theater is life.

Liz:

And I've had that drama teacher.

Liz:

And.

Diana:

Yes.

Liz:

And then she notices something that's in the bushes.

Diana:

Yeah.

Diana:

And.

Diana:

And something.

Diana:

It finally pulls her into the bushes and she drops her phone.

Liz:

The bushes eat her and the bushes eat her.

Diana:

And leaves her phone and a purple flower on the ground.

Diana:

So, yeah, we've got our Marie.

Diana:

Is it now?

Diana:

Yeah.

Diana:

Supernatural.

Diana:

We see Supernatural in lights.

Diana:

So we get, like, a sign.

Diana:

I'm just trying to think about, like, how to describe it, because it's hard to like.

Diana:

And it is the cutest thing because basically it's Marie inspecting her lights.

Diana:

Her show sign that it has little.

Liz:

Lights that's written the word Supernatural.

Liz:

And little stage lights.

Diana:

Little Hollywood stage lights.

Liz:

Yes.

Liz:

And it's very cute.

Liz:

And then she says, it just needs a little more.

Diana:

Grr.

Liz:

And then we get a montage of all the title cards that have ever been used in Supernatural, with the exception of some that were, like, in the monster thing and some.

Liz:

Some other stuff.

Liz:

So there was like, four that weren't used, but other than that, it's all of them.

Diana:

It's amazing.

Diana:

So, yeah.

Diana:

Then we cut to Dean.

Liz:

Dean is working on Baby, and that works for me.

Liz:

And then we get an explicit trunk shot that also works for me.

Diana:

Trunk.

Liz:

Yay, trunk.

Liz:

Team trunk.

Diana:

And we've got Sundown by Gordon Lightfoot playing.

Diana:

And Sam comes out and Dean's, like, out there working on babies, like, drinking coffee.

Diana:

So this is implied that it's morning and Dean is up early because Sam also asks how long he's been up.

Diana:

But Dean's more focused on the fact that he found them.

Diana:

A case shows Sam the paper and it's this missing teacher in Flint, Michigan.

Diana:

And Sam's like, there's literally nothing in this article that suggests this is the case for us.

Diana:

And Dean's like, but there's nothing that suggests it isn't a case either.

Diana:

Which is a weird premise to select the case.

Liz:

But it's 200 episodes of is this a case or Not?

Liz:

A case of the boys having this debate.

Liz:

And Dean just is like, nope, it's a thing.

Liz:

And we have work to do.

Liz:

And then we get a POV shot from Trunk, which is just really great.

Liz:

And so then we get this sexy, like what she sees from the inside.

Liz:

Like the world that she sees all the time.

Liz:

And then Dean just throws a sod off into her fan.

Liz:

Me.

Diana:

Well, Dean, yeah, he just needs to feel normal.

Diana:

And hunt.

Diana:

So they're gonna go to St.

Diana:

Alfonso's Girls School.

Diana:

And they're discussing that the last place Mrs.

Diana:

Chandler was seen was the auditorium.

Diana:

We find out that Dean is not a fan of theater kids.

Liz:

Yeah.

Liz:

And so he rags on theater kids.

Liz:

Which is, you know, most of you, I think we said before, but I was technically a theater kid.

Liz:

I mean, I was in theater of all of high school.

Liz:

And I did get a degree in theater and I did work in theater for a while.

Liz:

But then I decided that I really hated theater kids.

Liz:

And so I quit that.

Liz:

So I feel you.

Diana:

I was a theater kid.

Liz:

Yeah.

Liz:

Yeah.

Liz:

And mainly I did a lot of tech work because I would audition and not get cast.

Liz:

Because Nobody wanted the 4 foot 11 Goblin in their play.

Liz:

I don't know why, but we learned that Sam was in our town and that he was in Oklahoma.

Liz:

But he ran tech so Great.

Liz:

Because nobody wanted a six foot tall Bigfoot, I guess.

Diana:

Oh my gosh.

Diana:

Well, we see as they are walking into the school, their paper sign, which had a high quality one being hung over the door.

Diana:

It says Supernatural, the Musical, One night only.

Diana:

What?

Diana:

As Sam and Dean enter the auditorium, we hear someone saying.

Diana:

Idits practicing, saying.

Liz:

And before that, the principal lets them in.

Liz:

And her name is Mrs.

Liz:

Salazar.

Liz:

And guess who she's named after?

Liz:

Slytherin Salazar.

Liz:

Really?

Liz:

Yes, she's named after your house.

Liz:

So I wanted to point that out.

Liz:

Okay, so now we come in and we get to the idiots point.

Diana:

Yes.

Diana:

And as that's happening, this.

Diana:

She just keeps saying it.

Diana:

And we've got another actress dressed as Cassiel yelling, practicing yelling.

Diana:

Hey, ass butt.

Diana:

With different inflection.

Diana:

And then the piano and Castiel has.

Liz:

Complete with little like a trench coat and little fake wings.

Liz:

Like they're just adorable theater wings.

Diana:

It's so good.

Diana:

And then the piano starts and an actress, the actress that we saw earlier, Siobhan, dressed as Dean, starts singing on stage.

Diana:

And her song is a Broadway style narrative of supernatural.

Diana:

Yes.

Liz:

The boys watch in horror as their life comes to life on stage.

Diana:

In song.

Liz:

In song.

Liz:

John and Mary, husband and wife, bringing home a brand new life.

Liz:

Then there's a couple that's dressed like John and Mary.

Liz:

And they bring a baby doll into the crin.

Liz:

And we hear his name is Sammy.

Liz:

I'm big brother Dean.

Liz:

The perfect family, so it seemed.

Liz:

And then there's like a flat and there's a hole in there.

Liz:

There's a painted Mary on there.

Liz:

Then a person in black wearing a mask with yellow eyes on it comes in and they pick up the baby.

Diana:

They're singing about the demons.

Liz:

Then Mary's face is screaming from the.

Diana:

Hole, which by the way, is brilliant cat like set design.

Diana:

Like gold star to whoever thought of that.

Liz:

No, this whole set is fucking fantastic.

Liz:

This high school, as Sam points out, this theater has a lot of money, okay?

Liz:

So it hurts my brother.

Liz:

It left us in tears.

Liz:

And they go the road so far and the stage, the curtains pull back and there's this perspective painted pant road.

Liz:

And a car comes rolling in.

Diana:

Ah, it's a.

Diana:

It's a set piece, baby.

Liz:

There's a stage, baby.

Liz:

Stage baby comes in.

Liz:

Then the real Dean is in shock and yeah, he's upset.

Diana:

We get, we get a cut here though, from Marie and Dean is very upset and he's just.

Diana:

He almost has no words.

Diana:

He says, what in the holy.

Diana:

And Sam's like, there's.

Diana:

There's a case probably.

Diana:

If there's a case here, it probably something to do with this.

Diana:

So Marie introduces herself as the writer and director because she thinks that Sam and Dean are with the publisher.

Diana:

But her and Maeve are wrong.

Diana:

Ma, her stage direct, her stage manager.

Diana:

Excuse me.

Diana:

And write as Sam is flashing his FBI badge, the actor, actress, Sam and Dean are practicing flashing their FBI badges.

Diana:

It is hilarious.

Diana:

He gets self conscious about it.

Liz:

And so real Stan, Sam stops real Dean from flashing his batch.

Liz:

And so he's just like, I am Special Agent Smith.

Liz:

And in justice, he's about to tell them they're about to look into the disappearance of the teacher.

Liz:

Dean just blurts out, there's no Singing and supernatural.

Diana:

But this is Marie's interpretation.

Diana:

Thanks, Maeve.

Diana:

But he's like, but he has to go on.

Diana:

If there was singing, it would be.

Liz:

Classic rock, not this Andrew Floyd Weber crap.

Liz:

Which was in it, as God point out many, many times, was an ad lib line from Jensen.

Liz:

He was very proud of this.

Liz:

So get good on you on that one.

Diana:

Good job.

Diana:

Yeah.

Diana:

But Marie does clarify that they do a cover of Carry On My Wayward Son in the second act, so.

Liz:

Which is a classic.

Diana:

So Sam's like, look, we're here for the disappearance of Mrs.

Diana:

Chandler.

Diana:

And you know.

Diana:

And they're like, what?

Diana:

Have you asked where they think she might be?

Diana:

And they respond right away.

Diana:

Marie and Maeve are like, well, she could have been headed for the bar or the liquor store or both last year.

Diana:

And she was usually sipping grown up juice or passed out in that order.

Liz:

Fuck yeah.

Liz:

I want to be a drama teacher.

Liz:

I don't know.

Liz:

This is an option.

Liz:

Can I just get a certificate and do this?

Liz:

Like, holy shit, I bet Texas will let me.

Diana:

I don't think that's how you're supposed to do that.

Diana:

Either way.

Diana:

So Dean's like, well, I'm going to need 50 jello shots and a hose down to get this stink off of me.

Liz:

Yes, please.

Liz:

I am not mad at that image at all.

Liz:

Can we please get Mr.

Liz:

Ackles some jello shots and a hose?

Diana:

50?

Liz:

Well, that's a lot, but okay.

Liz:

But still, I would like to ply Mr.

Liz:

Ackles with some jello shots and then get a hose.

Liz:

I'm just saying I'm not mad at that.

Diana:

Well, Sam protects Dean from Maeve mauling him.

Diana:

And because apparently, in addition to being the stage manager, she's also the understudy for Jody Milski character.

Diana:

And then.

Diana:

And so Sam distracts her by asking her to give him a behind the scenes tour while Marie shows Dean Mrs.

Diana:

Chandler's office as an aside.

Diana:

Sam and Dean talk for a minute and Dean's like, I'm gonna throw up.

Liz:

Yeah, he's throwing up in his mouth.

Diana:

It sounds like it's kind of charming.

Diana:

And they're gonna go separate and look for cursed objects because they're sure that's.

Liz:

That's what this is.

Liz:

Oh, Sam's gonna look for emf and Dean's gonna look for cursed objects.

Diana:

Right, right.

Liz:

But Dean's just very unhappy with everything that's going on.

Liz:

Then we have this fabulous prop table, which is so organized.

Liz:

And I really want to do a prop table like this with Little drawings on it where things are supposed to go.

Liz:

That made me so happy.

Diana:

It was very organized prop table.

Diana:

I'm moderately impressed for high school students.

Diana:

And Dean wants to know where this came from.

Diana:

She's like, well, some of we made some was repurposed, but all awesome.

Diana:

It's funny, Amory.

Diana:

And Dean wants to.

Diana:

With the toy shotgun, which also you notice in the background that it's Harvell's as the.

Liz:

Yeah, there's a scenery flat for that.

Diana:

Yeah.

Liz:

I also.

Liz:

I'm just very proud of myself remembering the word flat.

Liz:

And so I'm gonna use that a lot throughout this.

Liz:

I may drop some other terms in high school theater production.

Liz:

We don't know.

Liz:

Scrim may come out.

Liz:

I'm not sure.

Diana:

Oh, okay.

Diana:

Well, either way, Marie's like, wants him to leave it the alone.

Diana:

And Dean notices that the actresses playing Sam and Dean are standing very close together talking next to baby.

Diana:

And Marie describes it as a BM scene.

Diana:

And Dean is concerned and asks bowel movement, as most adult people think would it be?

Diana:

And Marie says, no, it's boy melodrama scene.

Liz:

So this is where.

Liz:

Yeah, go ahead.

Liz:

This is a scene where the boys share a beer and their feelings.

Liz:

And the author of the.

Liz:

The writer of this episode, Robbie Thompson, did tweet fun fact.

Liz:

My first day on Supernatural, writers kept referring to the BM scene.

Liz:

And I was so confused.

Diana:

Confused.

Diana:

There you go.

Liz:

So this is actually a can.

Liz:

This is canon.

Liz:

This is.

Liz:

It's an actual thing.

Liz:

Which is.

Liz:

Makes it even better.

Diana:

It is.

Diana:

It's amazing.

Diana:

So Dean asks why they're standing so close together.

Diana:

And she's like coyly says reasons.

Diana:

So Dean says, you know their brothers, right?

Diana:

And she's like, She's a win sister.

Liz:

It's been so long since I've got to use the word winces on this show.

Liz:

And I just like seeing it to watch Diana's face and wins zest.

Liz:

So, yes.

Liz:

Subtext of wincest.

Diana:

Yeah.

Diana:

So either way, she tells them to separate because Dean tells her to just like, step apart.

Liz:

Step apart.

Diana:

Anyway, so Sam and Maeve are walk around and.

Diana:

And they're in the production booth.

Liz:

And this is a very impressive lighting booth.

Liz:

This is what I feel like after I left high school and they turned my high school into a high school for the performing arts or some crap like that became some magnet.

Liz:

And they turned this like.

Liz:

They made it to like this really badass theater.

Liz:

And I was like, the, you.

Liz:

You're children.

Liz:

Why do you need this?

Liz:

So, yeah, they have a Very expensive lighting booth.

Diana:

Light and sound, too.

Diana:

Because he's asking her if she's noticed anything strange, like weird sounds.

Diana:

And she immediately demonstrates on the soundboard all of the weird sounds that she has access to on the slide of a knob.

Liz:

Then Sam explains to her the pain of doing tech when your theater has no budget and you had to use two CD ducks.

Liz:

And yes, I do remember doing that.

Diana:

Yeah.

Diana:

But she gets a radio call and has to go sign for a delivery and want Sam to touch nothing while she's gone.

Liz:

So obviously, I remember using a lighting board at a professional theater.

Liz:

Not even a high school theater at a professional theater.

Liz:

But they were so cheap that they had the lighting board, like, where you couldn't touch that and the sound at the same time.

Liz:

Or maybe they expected two different people to be running a sound and a lighting board, but they wouldn't hire two people.

Liz:

So I had to, like, do the light, like both the light and the sound, while I was, like, perched on a stool.

Liz:

And then at some point, I fell off a stool and I broke a rib.

Liz:

But, you know, hey, that's theater.

Diana:

The show must go on or something.

Diana:

What?

Diana:

The.

Liz:

Good times.

Liz:

Yeah, the theater is a magical world.

Diana:

Anyhow, so either way, he's going to go play with the lights, because how would you not.

Liz:

You can't leave me alone in the room with lights and tell me not to touch things.

Diana:

No.

Diana:

So they.

Diana:

We cut.

Diana:

While Sam's playing with the lights, we cut to Mrs.

Diana:

Chandler's office.

Diana:

And there are several empty bottles in this room.

Diana:

I'm just saying that I don't think this is allowed in most, like, pretty.

Liz:

This is wax for the school is.

Diana:

Yeah, school is.

Diana:

Where's.

Diana:

Where is Mrs.

Diana:

Salazar?

Diana:

Where the.

Diana:

Is she.

Liz:

Yeah, maybe she's saying their props or something.

Liz:

But there is a very high school theater director's office.

Liz:

And there's a poster of Shakespeare holding something that looks like a jackalope skull.

Liz:

And it says, theater is life.

Diana:

Yeah.

Liz:

There's also a thing, which is what she said earlier.

Diana:

Yeah, it says exactly what she said earlier on the phone.

Diana:

So we also have a giant silver costume helmet, looks like a robot head with some flashing lights on her desk.

Diana:

And apparently it's as this has been missing.

Diana:

And Marie's been looking for it because it's for act two.

Diana:

And Dean's like, there's no space in Supernatural.

Diana:

And she's like, not canonically, but this is transformative fiction.

Liz:

You mean fan fiction.

Liz:

Yeah.

Diana:

Yeah.

Liz:

And so this was inspired by Edlin's books, but with A few embellishments because Chuck stopped writing after Swan song.

Liz:

Swan song.

Liz:

And she could not leave it the way it was.

Liz:

So Dean.

Liz:

She could not handle Dean living with Lisa in Sam back but not hunting.

Liz:

So she wrote her own endings with spaceships and robots.

Liz:

And then Dean becomes a woman, but just for a few scenes.

Liz:

Scenes.

Liz:

And in the live tweets of going on that night, Jensen Ackle said, apparently the scene where Dean becomes a woman, they just simply use the Sam wig.

Liz:

Instant chick hair.

Liz:

Get it?

Liz:

Hashtag Supernatural.

Diana:

I'm sure he was very proud of himself for that one.

Liz:

You know, he was.

Liz:

And everyone was just like, oh, Jensen is a chick hair.

Diana:

Well, I'm.

Diana:

I will say, as cute as all of this is, and I love this episode.

Diana:

So it's not that, you know, I'm not a fan fiction fan.

Diana:

So that's my aside for the day.

Diana:

I've held it.

Liz:

I love this fan.

Liz:

I love this fandom.

Liz:

I love this fandom's fan fiction.

Liz:

I love everything about this goddamn world.

Liz:

And I don't care what Diana says.

Liz:

Your fan fiction's awesome.

Liz:

You keep writing it.

Liz:

You put robots in there.

Liz:

You put Supernatural in space, if that's what you want to do.

Liz:

But Dean tells her the real truth because he got the unpublished books.

Liz:

So he knows everything that happened.

Diana:

Yep.

Diana:

Yeah.

Diana:

Sam came back.

Diana:

When Sam came back from hell, he didn't have a soul.

Diana:

Castiel brought Leviathans from Purgatory.

Diana:

They lost Bobby.

Diana:

Castiel and Dean got stuck in Purgatory.

Diana:

Sam hit a dog.

Diana:

They met a prophet named Kevin.

Diana:

They lost him.

Diana:

Sam underwent a bunch of trials to close the gates of Hell.

Diana:

They nearly.

Diana:

He nearly died from that.

Diana:

And Dean became a demon.

Liz:

A Night of Hell, in fact, because he's very proud of himself for being a Night of Hell.

Liz:

In fact, I think he thinks it's cool.

Liz:

But he was a demon.

Liz:

And Marie finds this hilarious and thinks it's bad fanfic.

Diana:

Yeah, yeah.

Diana:

She's offers to send him better.

Diana:

So back on stage, we've got Siobhan and who's playing Dean, and Kristen, who's playing Cassiel, hugging closely.

Diana:

And Dean's a little concerned, but Marie reveals that they're a couple in real life.

Diana:

And so he's like, okay, Maeve, I know.

Diana:

Marie says that.

Diana:

And then.

Diana:

So she also says that they explored Destiel in Act 2.

Diana:

Subtext.

Liz:

It's just subtext.

Liz:

And you can't spell subtext without S E, X.

Liz:

And also during.

Liz:

And also during this while Misha tweeted subtext.

Liz:

Is really getting its day in the sun here.

Liz:

Hashtag supernatural200th episode.

Liz:

And Jensen responded at Misha Collins.

Liz:

You keep your subtext to yourself, sir.

Liz:

I've told you, I'm not that kind of girl.

Liz:

Wait, what?

Liz:

Crap.

Liz:

Hashtag supernatural:

Diana:

So silly.

Diana:

I do love that Dean breaks the fourth wall right here.

Liz:

He does.

Liz:

He does.

Liz:

And they.

Liz:

They're also very proud of this.

Diana:

It's so good.

Diana:

So good.

Diana:

So mad is so good.

Diana:

I, I, that was.

Diana:

That had me like an actual, like a distinct laugh out loud.

Diana:

That's good.

Diana:

Well timed.

Diana:

Well timed.

Liz:

This is a very well done.

Liz:

And yes.

Liz:

So then outside, we got to real Sam and Dean and.

Diana:

And I got.

Liz:

Confused in my notes.

Diana:

Yeah.

Liz:

Okay.

Liz:

No real damage.

Liz:

Salmon Demur.

Liz:

Walking towards real baby.

Liz:

That's what my notes mean.

Liz:

Okay, so they're going to real baby.

Liz:

And Sam says he just doesn't get it.

Diana:

The pronunciation of Destiel.

Diana:

And he wants to discuss if it's Destiel.

Diana:

What about Sassiel?

Diana:

And he's Sam Steel.

Diana:

Yeah.

Liz:

So he's.

Liz:

He is shipping himself with Cass, which I think is a very interesting thing for him to bring up.

Liz:

Up.

Liz:

But also, DCL just sounds bad.

Liz:

It just does not sound as good as Dusty.

Liz:

L.

Liz:

I'm sorry.

Diana:

It just doesn't flow.

Diana:

No, but he, we.

Diana:

He does get back to the case.

Diana:

There's no UMF.

Diana:

No hex bags.

Diana:

And they're like, yeah, honestly, Mrs.

Diana:

Chandler could be like, face down in a bar or a ditch.

Diana:

It's kind of like whatevs.

Diana:

They're like, maybe this is all coincidence.

Diana:

Maybe it's not a case at all.

Diana:

And they're thinking about just bailing.

Diana:

They're like, what?

Diana:

Whatever.

Diana:

It's weird.

Diana:

And as they're doing it, Dean suggests casting.

Liz:

Sam suggests casting.

Diana:

Oh, Sam, I'm sorry.

Diana:

Sam suggests casting.

Liz:

And Dean wants him to shut his face and get in the car.

Diana:

And they drive away.

Diana:

That night, Maggie, who is playing Sam, is walking out.

Diana:

She is.

Diana:

If she.

Diana:

If it's not canon, it shouldn't be in the show.

Diana:

And Marie is chasing her.

Liz:

And they also.

Liz:

They should have done the Outsiders.

Liz:

And there's this.

Liz:

This is also.

Liz:

I think that's kind of funny.

Liz:

And there's another thing that'll come up later.

Liz:

But now, like, the Outsiders is a really big show on Broadway and it was not at the time.

Liz:

So I just think that's funny.

Liz:

I don't think.

Liz:

Yeah, I don't think it was there, but Essie Hinton was a big Fan of Supernatural and hanging out in the show.

Liz:

So funny.

Liz:

You know, that thing was going in.

Diana:

There, too, but that is funny.

Diana:

So, anyways, there she's.

Diana:

Maggie's like, I'm done.

Diana:

I'm going to the principal.

Diana:

This is.

Diana:

This is dumb.

Diana:

And so Marie goes back inside, and Maggie hears something in the bushes.

Diana:

And now she's getting stalked.

Diana:

And.

Diana:

But then, like, not from the bushes, just in the middle of the fucking parking lot.

Diana:

This weird, like, potato sack, scarecrow, dirt monster thing is, like, standing there, and she screams, and it gets grabbed by the vines from it.

Diana:

Marie actually hears it and comes out and sees the thing drag Maggie away and leave a purple flower on the ground.

Liz:

Yeah, so there's a purple flower on the ground again.

Diana:

So, again, Sam and Dean come back with Begin.

Diana:

The cops are there, and basically nothing got caught on the surveillance cameras, of course, but they notice the same flowers both times.

Diana:

And Marie does not really want to feel like talking to them because she thinks they're just gonna laugh at her.

Diana:

But.

Diana:

But she does tell them.

Diana:

Anyways, she says that Maggie was quitting the show.

Diana:

She was gonna get it shut down.

Diana:

She heard the scream, ran outside and saw her scare a scarecrow.

Diana:

Looked like just like the one from their show, only alive.

Diana:

Had Maggie wrapped up in its vines and took her behind the dumpster, and then they were both gone.

Diana:

And when she.

Liz:

Yeah, oh, sorry.

Liz:

Go ahead.

Diana:

And she called the cops.

Liz:

Yeah.

Liz:

Yeah.

Liz:

As I was writing this, I realized that there are a lot of characters with the.

Liz:

Their names starting with M.

Liz:

But Robbie Thompson said that he named the characters after people in his wife's theater group.

Liz:

So I guess that was just a lot of ends over there, but.

Liz:

Because first I was like, what?

Liz:

Maeve, Maggie, Marie.

Diana:

Marie.

Diana:

Yeah, it's a lot.

Diana:

But it was.

Diana:

She's like.

Diana:

She says she called the cops, and she keeps getting told that she's just adults.

Diana:

Keep just telling her she has an overactive imagination.

Liz:

That's what they do.

Diana:

But she has come to a conclusion.

Diana:

Marie has taken this observational moment and has decided that it's all real.

Diana:

Ghosts, angels, demons.

Diana:

And Maeve's like, well, I want to believe.

Diana:

And then Sam's like, you should.

Diana:

It is all real.

Diana:

And so are we.

Liz:

So are we.

Liz:

The Winchesters are real.

Liz:

And we're here.

Liz:

I am Sam, and this is Dean.

Diana:

Yay.

Liz:

Hey.

Liz:

And the girls find this hysterical.

Diana:

Yeah, they can believe that monsters are real, but those books are fiction.

Diana:

Plus, y'all are too old.

Liz:

Burn.

Liz:

Maybe you could be a Rufus Bobby combo.

Liz:

Oh, so harsh.

Diana:

So Dean pivots.

Diana:

He's not gonna sit and try to convince them, which I.

Diana:

I'm relieved that we don't get an annoying scene of that, quite frankly.

Diana:

He's like, fine, whatever.

Diana:

We are hunters, but we're like FBI hunters.

Diana:

They're like, oh, like, yeah, text files.

Diana:

Which is funny because the I want to believe comment.

Diana:

Just saying.

Diana:

A good tie in.

Diana:

Well done.

Diana:

Well done.

Diana:

Anyways, and they're basically.

Diana:

They have.

Diana:

The scarecrow is not canonical to the one from Supernatural, but they do have one that's based on a local legend, and so it was very creepy.

Diana:

Maybe somehow they created something from the play.

Diana:

Like.

Diana:

Like a tulpa?

Liz:

Yes.

Liz:

Like, maybe it's a topa.

Diana:

So Maeve is referencing Hell House and how they killed that while Dean rolls his eyes.

Diana:

And then they decide that they're like, okay, your.

Diana:

Your scarecrow is a prop, not a person.

Diana:

Right.

Diana:

Just to make sure before we decide we're going to destroy this.

Diana:

And yes, apparently it's terrifying.

Diana:

So they keep it in the boiler room.

Diana:

And so Sam and Dean are like, hey, by the way, our audience side, like, you, topos require a ton of psychic energy.

Diana:

The books are not quite popular enough to do that, and this play probably isn't even sold out.

Diana:

So where.

Diana:

Where the Is this coming from?

Diana:

But.

Diana:

And they're.

Diana:

They're so.

Diana:

They're not sure that this could actually be a Tulpa number one.

Diana:

And number two, Sam is, like, just trying to, like, rack his brain to figure out where the.

Diana:

He's seen this flower before.

Diana:

So he's gonna go research while Dean asks Marie to take him to the boiler room to see this terrifying scarecrow.

Liz:

Yeah.

Liz:

And so we go to the boiler room.

Liz:

Anne Marie once again tells Dean to gird his loins because it is horrifying.

Liz:

And he takes off the COVID and it's a pretty cute scarecrow.

Diana:

Yeah, it's not very terrifying.

Diana:

Just definitely not as scary as the one out there.

Diana:

Anyways, so it's a very dramatic scene.

Diana:

And so Dean gets a pipe wrench and asks if she wants to pinata this ass hat.

Diana:

She's very amused by his very Dean use of ass hat and.

Diana:

And passes on participating.

Diana:

So Dean beats the.

Diana:

Out of this stuffed prop and burns it.

Liz:

It seems satisfying.

Liz:

And I've never, like, had, like, I cut.

Liz:

I don't have a wrench that's that big, and I kind of want one now because it just seems like a fun thing to swing at stuff.

Liz:

Like, I don't actually want to fix plumbing with it.

Liz:

I Just kind of want to hit things with a wrench.

Diana:

I mean, that's.

Liz:

I think it's valid.

Diana:

French.

Diana:

Yeah.

Diana:

So they.

Diana:

They get that done and they go.

Liz:

Back to the library, incinerate it in this incinerator.

Liz:

I love how like every high school has like, a place you can set things on fire.

Diana:

Yeah, I don't think that's real life, but okay.

Liz:

I've never found a place to set things on fire at any high school I've been in, but maybe I've been looking hard enough.

Diana:

Maybe not.

Diana:

While back in the library, Dean and Marie join Sam and Maeve.

Diana:

And Sam announces it's not a tulpa, which is yes.

Diana:

Which Dean immediately requests that he say it again with an Arnold accent, not a tulpa.

Diana:

So Sam is like, no, we think it's Calliope.

Diana:

Here's her picture.

Diana:

She is the.

Diana:

And Maeve's like, as the goddess of extra epic poetry, she is associated with the star flower, which is this flower we have seen.

Diana:

And she manifests characters from stories that she's tuned into.

Diana:

So Marie's now annoyed that they burned up her prop for nothing.

Liz:

Yep.

Liz:

And then they learned that Calliope will use these creatures to.

Liz:

To inspire and protect the author until the vision is realized.

Liz:

And then she eats said author.

Liz:

Yeah, that is according to the lore, but this is our lore and we're gonna talk about something.

Liz:

So Calliope is a muse.

Liz:

And I hate muses.

Liz:

They're one of the things that are very hard to research because everybody names after muses.

Liz:

Stop.

Liz:

Naming after muses is.

Liz:

Makes for.

Liz:

Makes things very, very difficult to look up.

Liz:

Like web pages banned, whatever.

Liz:

You stop naming things muses.

Liz:

Anyway, so the muses, Greek goddesses.

Liz:

The number of muses and their origin depend on what time period poet you are talking about.

Liz:

They evolved from nymphs and they like nymphs, it continued to be associated with flowing water.

Liz:

The most well known version is that there are nine muses and they came from Zeus banging the goddess of memory, Mimosign and Moseni.

Liz:

I heard her name, said a few things, but I cannot recall all of them because my memory is not great.

Liz:

But he banged her nine days and so they got amused.

Liz:

Or every day they had sex so fast, quick, couldn't use a pull out method.

Liz:

So there are versions where they were children of Apollo and there is one version where they were the primeval daughters of Gaia and Uranus.

Liz:

And I just wanted to say Uranus.

Liz:

So anyhow, the popularity of the muses evolved as a Greek Culture grew in appreciation for arts and sciences and was overall less stabby.

Liz:

Stabby.

Liz:

The muses each have their own sphere of influence.

Liz:

Calliope is often the head muse in charge, the hmic.

Liz:

And she inspired these epic poems.

Liz:

And so.

Liz:

And their songs and remember.

Liz:

So when they say epic poems, that actually means, like, they had differences for little tiny poems and then these epic stories.

Liz:

Right, Right.

Diana:

It doesn't mean like.

Diana:

It doesn't mean like that poem's totally epic.

Liz:

That poem is epic.

Liz:

But it was epic because of the literal definition of a long story.

Liz:

Yeah.

Liz:

And poems were set to music to make them easier to remember because they weren't written down for a long time.

Liz:

Right.

Liz:

So Calliope was also responsible for the music part of it.

Liz:

She was the patroness of Homer, Ovid and Hesiod.

Liz:

Ancient writers, they almost always included the muses in their works.

Liz:

And for these great epic poems, Calliope was the one they called upon in the beginning.

Liz:

And they wouldn't just be asking for her blessing.

Diana:

Right.

Liz:

They were asking to be a conduit for her.

Liz:

And not only for the inspiration, but also to stay true and just remember all the goddamn words.

Liz:

Because there are so many words.

Liz:

Like, I saw Billy Bragg play at Rebellion.

Liz:

Humble Bragg.

Liz:

But he was saying somebod asked for a song, and he was like, remember, like.

Liz:

You only have to remember the lyrics to like, whatever.

Liz:

Like, to, like, one song.

Liz:

He was like, I have to remember the lyrics to every song up here.

Liz:

So anyhow.

Liz:

So that is one of the things that she is there for.

Liz:

So the other muses, as they were named by Hesiod, were Cleo, the muse of history.

Liz:

She inherited the memory of past events from her mother.

Liz:

I'm not going to try and say her mother's name again.

Liz:

Erato.

Liz:

Her name means desired or lovely.

Liz:

And she was related to that of Eros, and she was the goddess of love poetry.

Liz:

There was Euterpe, unfortunate name.

Liz:

She was, like Calliope, associated with music and poetry.

Liz:

Her speciality, though, was lyric poetry that told personal stories instead of epic tales of the past.

Liz:

And I could just hear this fight among sisters and being like, my stuff is about the heart, not about war.

Liz:

It's about love and personal.

Liz:

And humanity, the base of it.

Liz:

They're all humans.

Liz:

So then there's also Mel Pomeni, and she's one of the two muses of theater.

Liz:

She inspired the playwrights and actors of tragedy.

Liz:

Thalia was a counterpart of her, and she inspired comedies, is how we get the mass of tragedy and comedy.

Liz:

There is Urania not Uranus again, but Urania.

Liz:

She gave inspiration to astronomers in the later years of the Roman Empire.

Liz:

She was said to inspire Christian poetry.

Liz:

You know, when things change as they do with all religions.

Liz:

There was another one named Polyheminia, or maybe Polyhemia because she was responsible for hymns or poems of praise place.

Liz:

But she was also a mathematical muse who inspired work in geometry.

Liz:

You know the time like, we're just like, I gotta do this hot proof and I really need to like get down here.

Liz:

You'd be like, oh, Polyheminia, come work your way through me.

Liz:

And the last one was Terpsichore.

Liz:

I just like how I'm butchering these names and I just think they're better.

Liz:

So Terpsichore was the muse of dance and she also gave inspiration to the chorus in Greek theater.

Liz:

So I am very annoyed that I could not find out more information about the festivals.

Liz:

The Musea festivals, which were the Greek celebrations that were held in honor of the muses.

Liz:

Theoretically the Valley of the Muses, which is an actual place you can go visit.

Liz:

These festivals were supposed to happen like every four to five years starting in the third century B.C.

Liz:

and they had artistic competition, poetry, music and theatrical performances.

Liz:

People from across Greece would come here, like, this is the original battle of the band, right?

Liz:

And I want to see this, like, I want to know how this happened, like, where it goes.

Liz:

And just like again, the it uses.

Liz:

We're clogging the search engines and I just have a life and I could spend that much time trying to tear my apart.

Liz:

But if you have information on the like this, the literal Star of Music festival, send that to me.

Liz:

I would like to know more.

Liz:

All right.

Liz:

A couple of the legends about Muses, I think, which are.

Liz:

They're worth exploring more on your own.

Liz:

And we don't have time for here because this is not a story, a show about muses.

Liz:

But.

Liz:

So there's one about the Muses versus the Sirens.

Liz:

There is a legend where these sirens, AKA the nymphs with feathers or scales, who lure sailors through their desks with their songs, AKA my retirement plan.

Liz:

What we do in the Shadows has my favorite version of sirens, if you want to go look that one up.

Liz:

Anyhow, these sirens get calmed by Hera to ask for a singing contest with the Muses and they lost because their songs were melodies of false promises and thinly failed destruction, while the Muses were singing about blah, blah, blah, inspiration, creation, divinity and progression.

Liz:

It sounds like Jim and the holograms versus the Misfits.

Liz:

And I really Want to see this happen?

Liz:

So the muses win and then they pluck out all the sirens feathers and make crowns from them, which I think is really bitchy, but also kind of inspiring.

Liz:

So the sirens then turned white and they fall into the sea and become islands.

Liz:

Another.

Liz:

In another one of the legends that I'd like to know more about, Calliope is said to have birthed Orpheus.

Liz:

And so Orpheus, the one who after his wife died, he went crazy and he turned his back on all the gods except Apollo and then Dionysus followers, the maenads.

Liz:

Remember that from true blood.

Liz:

The maenads attacked him.

Liz:

And the first I started by throwing sticks and rock at him.

Liz:

Rocks at him.

Liz:

But the poet was so beloved that the sticks wouldn't hit them.

Liz:

Wouldn't hit him.

Liz:

The six are like, no.

Liz:

So finally the main as just ripped him to shreds with their bare hands.

Liz:

So.

Liz:

And then according to the legend, his head and his lira.

Liz:

Sorry, his liar.

Liz:

Not the lyra hoop, but whatever.

Liz:

He had a liru.

Liz:

So his lyric hoop continued to make music as they floated down river into the sea.

Liz:

So just like his head and his little like guitar thing are just floating down and there's his head still singing.

Liz:

And so is his little.

Liz:

His little guitar thing.

Liz:

And that lands on the island of Lesbos.

Liz:

And apparently his head continued to like give Apollo's prophecies for many years.

Liz:

On the poets claim that the muses gathered the pieces of his body for burial and placed his little guitar thing in the stars as a constellation and a memorial that Zeus readily agreed to honor the many hymns that Orpheus had written in his honor.

Liz:

So.

Diana:

Huh.

Liz:

Yeah, I went ahead.

Liz:

That like tells me prophecies.

Diana:

Right?

Liz:

Great.

Diana:

That's amazing.

Liz:

All right, so that was a little sidetrack on the muses and Calliope.

Diana:

Yeah, yeah.

Diana:

Well, yeah.

Diana:

So we are now concerned about Marie because of Calliope.

Diana:

So now they've pieced together that both their teacher and the classmate that have disappeared are the ones that tried to stop the show.

Diana:

And so Calliope's creatures are protecting it.

Diana:

And so now they've got to figure out how to make the show go on so they can get coypi.

Diana:

Yeah.

Diana:

So Marie is going to go breathe in a paper bag about this because she has just found that she is the target of a goddess.

Diana:

Anyways, that seems upsetting.

Liz:

I was dressed and.

Liz:

And she has a play to do.

Liz:

I am very shocked that the show did not bring back like my theater anxiety dreams which haven't happened for a while.

Liz:

And they'll probably come back to tonight.

Liz:

Usually, like, they involve me, like, having to do a play and nobody gave me the lines.

Liz:

And then you have to go up.

Liz:

That's really pretty good.

Liz:

Constant recurring one.

Liz:

Yeah.

Liz:

So Marie is having a panic attack, and that is now going to be the responsibility of Dean.

Diana:

Yeah.

Diana:

And so Marie is breathing, while Marie's breathing into this paper bag.

Diana:

Sam is going to get out of there.

Diana:

So he's gonna go get Steven, he's gonna go talk to her, and he's gonna explain that, look, your play isn't dumb.

Diana:

Even though I don't believe in this interpretation, I need you to believe in it so that we can kill Calliope and save your friends.

Diana:

And she's like, you're right.

Diana:

Sam and Dean wouldn't back down from the fight.

Diana:

Especially sweet, brave, selfless Sam.

Liz:

Marie is team Sam, so she would never.

Liz:

Sam would never back from the fight.

Liz:

And it's okay because she also understudied Sam and she has this wig from her one Woman Orphan Black show.

Diana:

So she is ready to be writer, director, and actor.

Diana:

I'm gonna Barbra Streisand this bitch.

Liz:

And then we see them going through their.

Liz:

Their pre show activities.

Diana:

Yeah, we've got an amazing program where brotherly love triumph over the dark powers of.

Diana:

As the auditorium fills, Sam has returned with stakes to.

Diana:

For him and Dean to kill Calliope.

Diana:

And the Dean is wandering around backstage and he asks where in the cast Chuck is.

Diana:

And Marie shares that the concept of the author inserting himself into the narrative is not her favorite because they all.

Liz:

Hate the meta stories just like this.

Liz:

So then we cut to Dean giving them their pre show pep talk.

Diana:

Yeah.

Diana:

And, well, I think there's a funny aside that Wicked would have been easier, but either way, he's like, I'm gonna.

Liz:

Bring that up because, like, again, timeliness, because we're in the air, like, at this point when this came.

Liz:

Well, it looks like when I was in high school, I was in, like, Wicked was not a musical.

Liz:

It was just the book.

Liz:

And I remember reading the book when I was in high school.

Liz:

So I was a theater kid that did not get Wicked.

Liz:

So when the Wicked, like, theater kids came, like, afterwards, I hate them, like, because they're not of my time.

Liz:

You wicked kids, like, you're.

Liz:

You're younger than me, so whatever.

Liz:

Younger people.

Liz:

But anyways, right now we're in the Ariana Grande Wicked era, so this is very tough.

Liz:

So Mary wanted to do Wicked, but they.

Liz:

They did Supernatural instead.

Diana:

Yeah.

Diana:

So but tonight is all about Marie's vision has put as much sub into that text.

Diana:

And they do like a hands in to do their big rah rah moment.

Liz:

Yeah.

Liz:

Who tells them to kick it in the ass.

Liz:

Which is adorable that they brought that into there.

Liz:

And then they're routine.

Liz:

Well, I had to figure out how to explain the rah rah I was.

Liz:

I really like the goatee team.

Diana:

Right.

Diana:

So they're hand pile Go team is Ghost Facers.

Diana:

But a really funny way.

Diana:

It's like ghost and they do facers and they do like fingers in front of their hands.

Liz:

I love my camera is loving me doing Facers.

Liz:

I'm gonna make Diana throw up.

Diana:

Don't do that.

Diana:

Don't do that.

Diana:

So Marie goes out on stage to pre wealth audience.

Liz:

It's called a curtain speech, Diana.

Diana:

Okay.

Liz:

If you're a theater kid, you would know that that's a curtain speech.

Liz:

Okay.

Liz:

So where we go to give the curtain speech and she tells the people out in the front that they should put on their ponchos because they're in a splatter zone.

Diana:

Yeah.

Diana:

Which is a surprise to us because they have not teased that part of the show yet.

Diana:

Which is funny.

Diana:

So either way, Sam and Dean are standing hovering in the wings.

Diana:

And the music.

Diana:

Music starts.

Diana:

And Siobhan starts to sing the song.

Diana:

While this is happening.

Diana:

Dean or Sam.

Diana:

Sam sees a shadow.

Diana:

No, it's just a gin character.

Diana:

It's like.

Diana:

It's kind of funny because they're like both like looking so hard and it's all.

Diana:

It's because the play is so well done.

Diana:

They keep mistaking things for the bad guys.

Diana:

And so eventually Dean does see the evil calliope scarecrow step through a set wall, a flat, if you will, behind Sam.

Diana:

And it grabs Sam.

Diana:

And as Dean runs behind the backdrop to get to Sam, by the time he gets there, they're gone.

Diana:

Yeah.

Liz:

Like.

Liz:

Yeah.

Liz:

And the.

Liz:

The whole.

Liz:

The back and forth between like him trying to symbol signal and Sam giving him a thumbs up and then just being like, no her like just listen to me.

Liz:

So that was really.

Liz:

Yeah, it was really well done.

Liz:

And so then we have the scarecrow brawl.

Liz:

And also some things I want to point out in the lyrics because they're just really good.

Liz:

In this part, dad was driven.

Liz:

No turning back.

Liz:

He wouldn't stop without the payback.

Liz:

He trained us both to track and hunt and kill.

Liz:

He took away our free will.

Diana:

Well.

Diana:

And then as this is happening, we also get to a part.

Diana:

Marie saw Sam get disappeared and the play, the song gets to of the road so far.

Diana:

Saving people, hunting things.

Diana:

A family business.

Diana:

So Sam wakes up, which, unfortunately, closed.

Diana:

But back in swing, Sam wakes up in the basement of the school.

Diana:

Because in addition to a boiler room, they also have a basement, apparently with a really, really old printer in it.

Diana:

I don't know if you just.

Diana:

That giant old Xerox machine.

Diana:

Anyways, and Maggie and Mrs.

Diana:

Chandler are there.

Diana:

And apparently she's been there for several days.

Diana:

So I'm, like, very concerned for her.

Diana:

But anyways, the she probably flask already.

Liz:

We don't know if there's a bathroom in the basement.

Diana:

That's my concern.

Diana:

But you're like.

Liz:

That was my main concern is like, is there a bucket full of Mrs.

Liz:

Chandler's crap?

Liz:

So, okay, so.

Liz:

And what is she eating or drinking?

Diana:

Yes.

Diana:

And Calliope appears and she is like, you're gonna miss the big show.

Diana:

So.

Diana:

And Sam's, like, going to attack her.

Diana:

But she does, like.

Diana:

She doesn't fling him.

Diana:

She does, like, a weird, like, slide thing and, like, shoves him against the wall and he loses his stake.

Diana:

I do love on stage that this scene they have created.

Liz:

Room.

Diana:

A funky motel room.

Liz:

So it's so good.

Liz:

It's so, so amazing.

Liz:

It's so well done.

Liz:

I love the colors.

Liz:

I want my house to be in the colors.

Liz:

It's so great.

Diana:

I love everything about going that far, but I love that I want a.

Liz:

Room of my house in that color.

Liz:

So, okay, so stage Dean has hung up on stage Cass after telling him that he can pop up in the morning.

Liz:

So stage Cass will just wait here then.

Diana:

He's gonna sing a song about how he raised Dean from perdition to be God's ammunition.

Diana:

And he's gonna wait.

Liz:

But now you need some rest.

Liz:

So I'll do what's best.

Liz:

And I'll just wait here then.

Liz:

That's all I'll do.

Liz:

I'll just wait here, then.

Liz:

I'll wait for you.

Liz:

And the audience digs the crap out of this.

Diana:

Oh, my gosh.

Diana:

Well, Calliope is monologuing real hard in the basement about how many authors she's consumed.

Diana:

And this was special.

Diana:

Maybe it's because their inspiration for the show showed up.

Diana:

I don't know.

Diana:

But either way, she doesn't really want to sit through the second act again with the robots and the tentacles and.

Liz:

Space, which I think is awesome.

Liz:

So then upstairs, we get a single tear.

Diana:

Yes, there is actress Dean is with a actress demon in a devil's trap.

Diana:

And these.

Liz:

I didn't have a cute.

Liz:

You said it.

Liz:

And I was just like, I don't have it.

Liz:

I've got the trap door.

Liz:

I can do that one.

Liz:

It's gonna be really loud.

Diana:

That is loud.

Diana:

But we've got.

Liz:

I didn't have a cue because you just went to Devil's Trap.

Liz:

But I didn't have the Devil's Trap.

Liz:

Cute.

Liz:

Anyways, I'm sorry.

Diana:

So we've got our single man tier moment and it is Sam song.

Diana:

Wishing Dean could see Sam the way Sam.

Diana:

Or wishing he could see him himself the way Sam sees him.

Diana:

A single man tear A single man.

Liz:

Tear A single man tear.

Liz:

So, yeah, so they also.

Liz:

They have this really great, like, little Latin verse that goes with it.

Liz:

But so their stage Dean is exercising a demon.

Liz:

Then the demon on stage smokes out and it is this brilliant fabric that points out of the mouth and it just.

Liz:

Just flows across the stage.

Diana:

So awesome.

Liz:

I love it.

Liz:

And then I just kind of want all demons now to smoke out that way.

Diana:

Well, then Dean sees the real Scarecrow by Marie, and so he runs across the stage where he can be seen by the audience and tackles it.

Diana:

Maeve is stepping up in her stage management duties and she is going to fucking handle.

Diana:

She's.

Liz:

Well, she's been handling the whole time.

Liz:

She is an amazing stage manager.

Diana:

She's very.

Liz:

Her cues have been fantastic.

Diana:

And Sam is still trying to get Calliope to talk, like, why Supernatural?

Diana:

And she says, because it has everything.

Diana:

Life, death, resurrection, redemption.

Diana:

Above all, family, all set to music.

Diana:

You can really tap a toe, too.

Diana:

And so Supernatural is epic.

Liz:

And she uses the word epic and that now we can talk also.

Liz:

It's even epic poetry.

Liz:

Yeah, yeah.

Liz:

This is epic poetry.

Liz:

I think it's great.

Liz:

So that's why Calliope is here.

Diana:

Yes.

Diana:

And in the meantime, Maggie and Mrs.

Diana:

Chandler have been working on a plan.

Diana:

And we get a bunch of back and forth where we've got on stage, Dean fighting this scarecrow and getting his fucking ass kicked.

Diana:

And in the basement, Maggie hits Calliope with a book.

Liz:

And when Dean gets thrown across the stage, the man in the front row puts on his poncho, which was.

Liz:

Was probably a really good idea.

Diana:

Sam manages to get the steak back and in the basement and on upstairs on stage, Marie sees that Dean has dropped his steak and she yells, no chick flick moments.

Diana:

Runs and stabs the scarecrow monster.

Diana:

At the same time, Sam stabs Calliope and both explode into a bunch of purple goo.

Liz:

Yep.

Liz:

So purple goo reigns all over the scarecrow and the audience.

Liz:

And then a slow clap turns into a standing ovation, and the curtains close for intermission.

Diana:

So ridiculous.

Diana:

So we cut to Sam and Maeve, and she's like, this is usually where Sam and Dean would take off before getting a bunch of questions.

Diana:

By the way, thanks for saving my friends.

Diana:

And if.

Diana:

You know.

Diana:

You know, if you cut your hair, you'd make a pretty good Dean.

Diana:

So Dean tells Marie that she did good.

Diana:

It's been educational seeing the story from her perspective.

Liz:

Yes.

Liz:

And then he's just like, even though they're different, I have my version and you have yours.

Liz:

And it's so sweet.

Liz:

And it's just like, oh, this.

Liz:

This whole episode, they have said, is a letter to the fans.

Liz:

And it's things like this that just makes me go away.

Liz:

Like, oh, you're respecting their fan fiction.

Liz:

That is the sweetest thing, like, anybody of a show could say, right?

Diana:

Yeah.

Diana:

And I think it's an interesting hint because she holds up this amp.

Diana:

The amulet.

Diana:

This amulet.

Diana:

And says that he shouldn't have thrown it away.

Diana:

And he's like, well, it never worked.

Diana:

I didn't need that as a reminder for how I felt about my brother.

Diana:

And she says, just take it.

Diana:

Jerk.

Diana:

Jerk.

Diana:

And Dean calls her A.

Diana:

But she.

Diana:

But he takes it.

Diana:

But does that mean that she knows.

Liz:

No, but it's so just.

Liz:

It's a little inappropriate, right.

Liz:

To have the jerk when he calls her a.

Liz:

So.

Diana:

I know, but I was like, does that mean she knows that he's really Dean?

Diana:

That's what I thought.

Liz:

But maybe not here.

Liz:

Not here.

Liz:

I think she kind of has.

Liz:

No, she does.

Liz:

Yes, though she does, because she calls him Dean and she hands him the Samuel.

Liz:

Yeah.

Liz:

So Marino.

Liz:

Gross.

Liz:

Yeah.

Diana:

Okay.

Liz:

I was thinking about something else.

Diana:

Anyway, so the curtain's open, and we've got our.

Diana:

Our big scene of.

Diana:

Anyways, I just want to say they.

Liz:

Give the cue for the sound star, and there's a baby sound.

Liz:

And it's kind of like a big thing in the show, like all the different versions of the Impala sound and the things that aren't the Impala.

Liz:

So I just really like that they have the same them Car Q there until the baby starts.

Liz:

And then we get stage Dean and stage Marie Sam, because that's stage Marie Sam.

Liz:

And they're in stage baby.

Liz:

And Sam and Dean are watching all this from backstage.

Diana:

And Dean's just like, yeah, the BM scene.

Diana:

And Sam's like the bowel movement scene.

Diana:

And Dean's like, no, shush.

Diana:

Because he wants to watch it and Sam and actors Sam and Dean say, two of us against the world.

Diana:

Sam is what she said.

Diana:

And then we get the singing of the Mary, the act, the actress Mary, actress John starts singing Carry On My Wayward Son.

Diana:

Very lovely interpretation of it, by the way.

Liz:

It's the sweetest version.

Liz:

And I cry every time.

Liz:

And then on the stage, you see a kid in a red shirt and Sam asks, who's that?

Liz:

And names like, that's Adam, John's other kid that Sam and Dean have just forgotten is rotting in a cage with Lucifer.

Liz:

Like, oh, we have just completely forgotten about our other brother.

Liz:

Whoops.

Diana:

Yeah.

Diana:

Oopsies.

Diana:

Oopsies.

Diana:

So, ta da.

Diana:

Sam and Dean are driving away.

Diana:

Dean has the amulet on the rear view mirror and they're in base and they're gone on the road.

Diana:

In the auditorium, Maeve tells Marie that someone claimed their publisher's ticket at the box office.

Diana:

And so Marie is excited.

Diana:

She's like, does that mean Calliope, though, came for me or for them?

Diana:

Possibly because she knows that it is the writer.

Diana:

She thanks them for coming and she asks Chuck, what.

Diana:

What did you think?

Diana:

And he says, not bad.

Diana:

Which is kind of rude.

Diana:

He should have been more.

Liz:

Yeah, so what?

Liz:

Oh my God, that is Chuck.

Diana:

So you have to Chuck in a minute.

Liz:

We haven't seen Chuck.

Liz:

And so I'm going to bring up something here that I know Diana is probably not thought about, but I'm just dropping this in here because this is what was happening at the the time this episode aired.

Liz:

At the time this episode aired, there is a very large controversy among the Supernatural fandom of Chuck's role within Supernatural and whether or not Chuck is God.

Diana:

Oh.

Liz:

So Chuck has just appeared at here and says it's not bad.

Liz:

So I'm going to leave that at there to put that thought into Diana's head because it was definitely something that was going amongst the fandom at this.

Liz:

This point.

Liz:

And then Chuck showed up.

Diana:

So in a fan centric episode saying that happened.

Liz:

Okay, okay.

Liz:

All right.

Liz:

And I have a couple other things I want to say just about this and we'll do that after we go through some casting notes.

Speaker C:

Casting couch.

Speaker C:

It's the casting couch.

Speaker C:

Were they on that show that time with that guy?

Diana:

Sure.

Diana:

So we've got just a handful of folks.

Diana:

Just want to make sure we give them a little bit of props.

Diana:

We've got Marie was played by Katie Serif.

Diana:

She's been in episodes of Girl Meets World and this is Us.

Diana:

Also was Daniella in Annabelle Comes Home horror movie.

Diana:

Maeves played by Joy Regulano.

Diana:

Episodes of a reboot of:

Diana:

Castle Comedy Bang Bang.

Diana:

Modern Family Mythic Quest.

Diana:

Barry and Lincoln lawyer Siobhan is played by Alyssa Lynch.

Diana:

It was a handful of episodes of Travelers.

Diana:

She was in the music video for the Chainsmokers song Closer.

Diana:

It's just interesting.

Diana:

A credit.

Diana:

And then is Lola in Before I Fall.

Diana:

Maggie was played by Natalie Sharp.

Diana:

Episodes of another reboot of:

Diana:

A handful of times.

Diana:

Van Helsing.

Liz:

Wait, there was more than One reboot in 921 now.

Liz:

Or is it?

Diana:

Yeah.

Diana:

And a reoccurring character a handful of times on Flash.

Diana:

Calliope was played by Hannah Levy in episodes of Bates Motel.

Diana:

A few episodes of Reginald the Vampire was Sandy in Mega Shark versus Mecha Shark.

Diana:

Victoria in the Magicians.

Diana:

That's a re.

Diana:

That's a reoccurring character several times.

Diana:

Janine in Siren was a regular character on that.

Diana:

And Christine in Brand New Cherry Flavor, a handful of episodes of that as well.

Diana:

Alice was our other.

Diana:

Our other actress.

Diana:

She was Kelly Ogmundson.

Diana:

Was Dolores Stub on Animal Control.

Diana:

Regular character on that has also been in episodes of the Good Dr.

Diana:

And Mrs.

Diana:

Chandler was played by Alberta.

Diana:

Main episodes of Fringe and was as a kissing nurse in Night at the Museum.

Diana:

Battle of the Smithsonian.

Liz:

Very awesome.

Liz:

And I actually know who that character was on Animal Control because I'm enjoying that series.

Liz:

And Joel McHale was flirting with her.

Liz:

Yeah.

Liz:

It's fun because there's animals.

Liz:

Yeah.

Liz:

So again, this was the 200th episode of the show.

Liz:

And you would ask this.

Liz:

Does that mean this is the 200th episode of our show?

Liz:

And it does not, because we've done bonus episodes and we've also done something.

Liz:

But we also, like, smush some things together.

Liz:

So I actually do.

Liz:

I think we're like 198, something like that.

Liz:

It was very hard for me to figure that out because we have.

Liz:

Anyways.

Liz:

So there.

Liz:

But obviously 200th episode was a big deal for them.

Diana:

Yeah.

Liz:

E.

Liz:

News dropped an article the day this aired and talked to a bunch of the cast about that.

Liz:

So Jensen said that when he saw the script, I didn't have a positive reaction the first time.

Liz:

I think in 200 scripts, I went and sat down in the showrunner's office and said, what in God's name are you doing?

Liz:

Why?

Liz:

I need to understand why this is happening.

Liz:

It took some convincing from executive producer Jeremy Carver for Ackles to finally come around to the idea.

Liz:

He gave some very eloquent answers and did a great job of explaining while we were doing what we were doing.

Liz:

Sorry, I did miss an AC voice.

Liz:

I guess I've been aware of this fanfiction for a while and it felt like maybe if I ignored it it would eventually go away when I read it in the script.

Liz:

This is what I do for a living is my work.

Liz:

I'm very protective of these characters in the story and I think we have a right to be.

Liz:

I wasn't angry.

Liz:

I just wanted to understand why.

Liz:

And with the message we were ultimately, ultimately sending with a scripted story, by the end of it I felt good and it gave me all the confidence I needed.

Liz:

It was better than I could ever have hoped.

Liz:

And he continued, I never should have even sat down this office so Jeremy, I'm sorry, but Jensen's was not the only one raising eyebrows at the premise of the milestone episode.

Liz:

His co star Padalecki's first thoughts Please don't make us sing, padalecki said with a laugh.

Liz:

We've been in a situation like this more than actors and other shows where they tell us to break the fourth wall.

Liz:

We're always thrilled.

Liz:

Our approach to this, as long as we can remain true to Sam and Dean, the situation, which obviously makes for a lot of comic relief, that is kind of daunting.

Liz:

Then some things go on.

Liz:

Then we get to Cassiel is in the episode.

Liz:

But I, Misha Collins, am not, Collins told E.

Liz:

News.

Liz:

Have I met the girl playing Cass?

Liz:

No, and I'm going to kill them.

Liz:

But I've heard that it's funny.

Liz:

There should be some comedy there.

Liz:

From all accounts, it's either going to be an absolute screaming success or an absolute train wreck.

Liz:

So was Collins bummed that he didn't get to appear in this episode?

Liz:

Oh yeah, he was.

Liz:

When I saw the script, I also sent an email.

Liz:

I wasn't so audacious to show up in the writers room, Collins said.

Liz:

I sent an email and I was like, I would love to be in the 200th episode because it's such a milestone.

Liz:

It is such a big deal.

Liz:

And again, Jeremy very eloquently explained how they wanted to prioritize quality in this episode.

Liz:

So they were casting Cassiel with another actor and I thought that was a good choice.

Diana:

He's hilarious.

Liz:

He really, Mr.

Liz:

Collins is a funny, funny dude and we highly recommend going to see his one man show, whatever he got.

Liz:

So okay, so what did you think?

Diana:

It was a super fun episode.

Diana:

I think it was like a cool way of healing for the Brothers too.

Diana:

I think that was cleverly done because it was kind of therap.

Diana:

It's like.

Diana:

I don't know.

Diana:

It was, like, therapeutic for them.

Liz:

Yeah.

Liz:

You get to look back on their lives in, like, this way and, like, where all these people think they're really awesome.

Diana:

See how.

Diana:

See how the other people perceive them and what they're doing.

Diana:

So I think it was good.

Diana:

I think it was really clever.

Diana:

I love Marie so much.

Diana:

As much as I would hate her in real life.

Diana:

She was very fun to watch because.

Liz:

You would be Marie.

Liz:

You would be Marie.

Liz:

You wouldn't.

Diana:

Would I?

Diana:

Damn it.

Diana:

No.

Diana:

I don't want to be Marie.

Diana:

I kind of am.

Liz:

Sorry.

Diana:

That's why you think I'm Ma.

Diana:

But.

Diana:

Yeah.

Liz:

Well, I feel like I.

Liz:

In this version of myself, like, I would be Ma.

Liz:

Like, I would go back and school and really embrace all the technical theater that I ended up putting.

Liz:

Like, I really wish I could go back and just be.

Liz:

Never ever tried to do the acting side and just only, like, went balls to the wall with, like, the tech side.

Liz:

I did.

Liz:

Like, I have very fond memories of building sets and just because it was fun.

Liz:

It's very artistic and creative and it was.

Diana:

Well, yeah.

Diana:

And you think of creative ways to present the scenes like they did in this.

Diana:

So I think that was cool.

Diana:

And I kind of.

Diana:

I say that, like, knowing.

Diana:

Obvious, this is fiction.

Liz:

But there was somebody with a really big budget.

Diana:

Yeah.

Diana:

But there was still somebody on the Supernatural staff that was creating how they were going to create this.

Diana:

And that was really clever.

Diana:

Some of it.

Diana:

Like the.

Diana:

Even the cock smoke out.

Diana:

Like, it was really well done.

Diana:

It was fun.

Diana:

They made it more, like, cool.

Diana:

They didn't skip over stuff like that.

Diana:

Even though the meta.

Liz:

Of.

Liz:

Yeah, it was very meta.

Liz:

And yeah, it was the high school theater of our dreams.

Liz:

And the songs are all really amazing.

Liz:

Like, I think they were all, like.

Liz:

They were really good.

Liz:

Like, this is, I think, a really clever way to do a musical episode.

Diana:

Right.

Liz:

And like, you almost like, I was looking for quizzes of.

Liz:

I was thinking about doing like, a quiz of other TV shows that have done musical episodes.

Liz:

But they were like, there are enough of them, but it's.

Liz:

None of them compares to this or Buffy, which clearly, like the bet.

Liz:

The best versions that were done.

Liz:

And, you know, usually, like Jared said, it's a.

Liz:

Please don't make a sing.

Liz:

It's usually the.

Liz:

The main characters that get, like, thrown into, like, in Buffy, where they could have easily done this as a Once more with feeling episode where Sam and Dean got into a trickster world.

Diana:

Yeah.

Liz:

Like, I can see Gabriel Trickster coming back for this and like, them putting it.

Diana:

Yeah, no, for sure.

Diana:

They could have done that.

Diana:

I think that that's like the knee jerk thought.

Diana:

When you say it's gonna be.

Diana:

If you say it's gonna be a musical episode, that's your knee jerk thought.

Diana:

You're like, oh, gee.

Diana:

So that's.

Diana:

That's definitely what's gonna happen.

Liz:

Not that they're gonna write a musical musical.

Liz:

And it's so smart.

Liz:

I think it's so well done.

Liz:

This is such a.

Liz:

It's a brilliant way to do the 200th episode to go through.

Liz:

Bring back, like, because they also, like, they were able with the Adam thing, like, to be able to bring back that note of what the happened to Adam Mulligan.

Liz:

Like, that's some genius.

Liz:

This is.

Diana:

It's.

Liz:

Yeah.

Diana:

Really well done.

Diana:

And just like, the little stuff.

Diana:

Even though we didn't see the scene with Jod Mills, they made a reference.

Diana:

We didn't see a scene with Bobby, per se, but we get a good reference.

Diana:

We didn't.

Diana:

You know what I mean?

Diana:

Like, there's a lot of, like, reference to Rufus.

Diana:

Like, just so many good reference, like, throwback references.

Diana:

Really well, solid, solid, solid writing for sure.

Liz:

Yeah.

Liz:

And just the idea of taking the fan fiction from a high school.

Liz:

Like, I just.

Liz:

About the Podcast

Devil's Trap: A Supernatural Podcast
A Supernatural fan show where longtime fan Liz “trapped” Diana, into watching for the first time. Come along for a spoiler free watch with crafty urban fantasy enthusiasts.
We're going back to the beginning of the road and watching Supernatural from the beginning. For your host Liz, it's probably her fifth time through. For your other host Diana, it's her first. She claims she was scared. Naturally as a supportive friend, Liz will attempt to exploit this fear as much as possible. We also dive into the spooky spook in the show in whatever way we want - occult, folklore, true crime, shopping, GAME SHOWS?
